The Sixers got the win over their division-rival Nets at home on Monday to snap a five game losing streak. The 76ers got a great game out of Spencer Hawes and a solid game from all of their starters. The win came only one day after another disappointing loss to the lowly Magic on the road, yet in this game the Sixers were able to beat a playoff-bound Brooklyn squad. The win is Coach Collins' 100th win with Philadelphia.
Although they trailed 28-24 after the first quarter, the Sixers came out with a dominant second quarter and went into halftime leading 53-46. After an evenly matched third quarter, Brooklyn was able to cut the Sixers' lead to 8 in the final quarter but went cold from the field as Philadelphia was able to close out the game with the lead and earn the win, 106-97. Philadelphia got great performances from all their starters as three of them finished with double-doubles. Hawes had a tremendous game, scoring a season-high 24, grabbing 10 boards, 2 blocks, and helping out this teammates with 7 assists. This is Spence's third solid performance in a row during a pretty inconsistent season. On the other hand, Thad Young has been consistently dominant as of late, averaging 15.8 ppg and 9.1 rpg over his last ten games. Against Brooklyn, Young had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jrue Holiday also had a good game finishing with 15 points and 11 assists and only 1 turnover. As a team, the Sixers only gave up 7 turnovers compared to the Nets' 11, which can be a deciding factor in a close game. Evan Turner added 16 points and Damien Wilkins, getting his second straight start, finished with 13. Dorell Wright added a good game off the bench with 15 points and 3 3-pointers. As a team, the 76ers shot a very impressive 52.6% and an even more impressive 53.3% from beyond the arc.
The Sixers survived another a second-straight incredible performance from Brooklyn's Deron Williams who had 27 points, 13 assists and 6 rebounds. Joe Johnson scored 20 and Brook Lopez had 19 for the Nets who had 44 points in the paint and shot an efficient 49.4% from the floor.
This is only Philadelphia's second win in 14 games in what has been a disgraceful second half of the season. The Sixers are now last in the division and 9 games out of the 8th seed with only 19 games remaining. Although Collins picked up his 100th win with the team, who knows if he'll be around next year after this year's lost season. The Sixers play against Miami again on Wednesday in Philly and I hope we can see another tightly contested game much like last week's.
