Phillies Fall in Extra Innings

The Phillies and Rays needed some extra baseball today to determine a winner, as the game went 10 innings, before the Rays came away with a 3-1 victory.  Off-season acquisition John Lannan threw five shutout innings while allowing only 2 hits, and striking out 4.
Lannan continues to look solid through spring as he prepares to be the Phillies 5th starter this season.  Justin De Fratus replaced Lannan and collected a blown save, as he allowed 1 run on 3 hits in two innings pitched.  Jeremy Horst and Antonio Bastardo were the next pitchers to take the mound for the Phillies, and each tossed one hit less inning, while also striking out 1 a piece.  Jay Johnson came on for the Phillies to pitch the 10th, and was one out away from getting through the inning before he gave up a walk-off two-run home run.  While neither team was impressive at the plate on the day, the Phillies performance was especially underwhelming, as they collected only 4 hits on the day.
The Phillies lineup was without the services of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard today, as both received the day off, and it clearly showed.  Ben Revere went 1 for 3 on the day but was then picked off of first base.  Kevin Frandsen went 1 for 4 at the plate on the day, and struck out twice.  Carlos Ruiz had a 1 for 3 day the plate, collecting the Phillies only RBI, while also walking once.  Dom Brown continued to impress at the plate as he went 1 for 3 on the day, and scored the Phillies lone run.  Brown is now hitting .367 on the spring, and seems a virtual lock to win a starting spot in the Phillies outfield.  It was an incomplete effort by the Phillies on the afternoon, as they received stellar pitching, but just could not produce anything at the plate.  The Phillies will be back in action tomorrow against the New York Yankees.
