Flyers Take Control of Game, Beat Caps in OT 5-4

Going into the third period today the score was 2-2 and both teams had registered 17 shots.  Talbot and Read scored for the Flyers and Backstrom and Green scored for the Capitals.  The third period was undoubtedly one of the most eventful periods of hockey this season though.

Five minutes into the third, Jakub Voracek won his first NHL fight ever, which came at the hands of Steven Oleksy.  It was great to see Voracek throwing some punches while sticking up for his captain, Giroux, who had just been hit.  For his efforts though, he got thrown out for game misconduct.  This gave the Caps an unreleasable 4-minute power play, which they took advantage of to the tune of 2 goals by Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin.  This wasn't enough though.

Giroux seemed determined to make up for his sloppy turnover during the power play that pushed the game to 4-2.  He did just that on a slapshot from up high.  After that Timmonen scored with 10 seconds left to go in the game to send it to overtime, where Ruslan Fedotenko notched the game winner.

This is a side of the Flyers we haven't seen in a while.  They were determined not to let this slip away.  With this win the team moves only 2 points behind the Rangers for the last playoff spot.  Things seemed utterly hopeless last week, but now they are looking brighter.  That being said, the defense is still depleted and I don't think Kent Huskins is the savior the team needed.  Hopefully the team's will to win will carry them through these remaining 14 games.  If the Flyers can manage to use this as a confidence booster and carry this momentum forward there's no reason they can't beat the Canadiens at home on Wednesday.
