Phillies Give Braves the Tomahawk Chop

The offense was out in full force today as the Phillies defeated the Braves by a score of 10-5 at Bright House Field.  Chase Utley returned to the lineup and had an impressive day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored in the game.
It was Utley's first action since Monday, after being scratched due to wet field conditions on Tuesday, and receiving the day off from a road trip yesterday.  The 2012 Phillies Minor League Player of the Year, Darin Ruf, collected his first hits of the spring, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.   While Ruf, who is fighting for a roster spot, looked like he finally may be comfortable at the plate, his defense still looks quite suspect.  Ruf committed his second error of the Spring and will need to show slightly more sound defense if he wants to make the Phillies roster as an outfielder.  Off-season acquisition Michael Young also collected his first hit of the spring in a 1 for 2 day with 2 RBI's.  Ben Revere continued to make his case to be the Phillies lead off hitter, with a 2 for 3 day in which he collected one walk.  Dom Brown continued to look solid so far in Grapefruit League play with a single and a walk.  The Phillies displayed some power at the plate today, collecting 5 doubles and 2 home runs.  Ryan Howard continued his hot start to the spring by going 2 for 3 with a double, home run, and two RBI's.  The first base position continued to produce after Howard was lifted, as John Mayberry Jr., hit a home run and walked once.  Overall on the day, the Phillies collected 13 hits, to go along with some decent pitching.
Cole Hamels got the start in this afternoon's contest, and again looked quite impressive in his short appearance, going 3 innings, with 5 strikeouts, while allowing 1 unearned run.  Hamels was relieved by Mike Adams, who was making his first appearance as a Phillie.  Adams pitched a single scoreless inning, that was followed up by another scoreless inning from left-hander Jake Diekman.  The Phillies next pitcher would not be so lucky however.  In what was the only bad performance on the day from the pitching staff, Jonathan Pettibone allowed 4 runs in two innings pitched.  Ethan Martin took over for Pettibone, and finished the game off with two scoreless innings.  So with some powerful offense today, and solid pitching with the exception of Pettibone, the Phillies collected a win to move to 2-3-1 so far in Grapefruit League play.  The Phillies visit the Yankees tomorrow in a game that will be started by Roy Halladay.  Go Phils!
