In an effort to keep their reputation as one of the least feared lineups in the majors, with the exception of the Astros and tonight's opponent the Marlins, the Phillies offense chose to do little to nothing yet again. Unlike the late inning dramatics that saw the Phillies hit back to back home runs to win yesterday, there was no such excitement tonight, as they fell to the lowly Marlins 5-1.
You may be asking yourself, "Kyle why is there a picture of a dog in a Santa costume? What does that have to do with the Phillies?" To that I say, "It's there to cheer you up before you read about the rest of this miserable display of hitting by the Phillies." So here we go.
Cole Hamels got the starting nod for the Phillies tonight, and was solid in his outing, not that it matters when your teams offense looks like a tee-ball team (my apologies to tee-ball players who are offended). Hamels tossed six innings while allowing 2 runs, striking out 10 batters and allowing no walks. Hamels continued to receive no support, and now has not held a lead in a game since April 7. No, I'm not kidding it has been that long.
Justin De Fratus took over for Hamels and tossed one inning while allowing a single earned run. Jeremy Horst took over in the eighth after De Fratus allowed the lead off batter to single. Horst recorded one out before handing things over to Phillippe Aumont, who allowed 2 runs on 3 hits over two-thirds of an inning pitched.
On the offensive side of things for the Phillies there is not much to report on, as they continue to put in a lackluster performance at the plate, that will probably struggle more with Carlos Ruiz heading to the DL, and Ryan Howard out with an injured knee. Jimmy Rollins and Michael Young each had 2 for 4 evenings at the plate with a double a piece, as Young continues to be the only Phillies member steadily getting on base. The only other member of the Phillies worth telling you about is Domonic Brown who went 2 for 4 on the evening while hitting his eighth home run of the season.
So now the Phillies will look to regroup before tomorrow evenings contest against the Marlins. Tyler Cloyd will get the call-up from the minors to make the start and we can only hope he brings some offense with him from Lehigh Valley.
