In the first game of the series against the Reds tonight, the Phillies fell by a score of 4-2 to dip back to a game under .500. Despite yet another great start from Cliff Lee, the Phillies simply could not get anything going offensively on the night, leading to another disappointing loss.
Lee, making his third start of the 2013 season looked to be in mid-season form yet again. On the night Lee threw seven innings while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 4. Lee walked 1 batter on the evening, his first walk allowed since last season (no you're not seeing things, I said last season, as in 2012).
After Lee exited the game the Phillies tied things up, but Jeremy Horst quickly saw that change, as he allowed 2 runs in one-third of an inning. Mike Adams allowed the hit that scored the two runs after replacing Horst, but the runs were charged to Horst's line.
The Phillies offense seems to have caught a case of the Marlins since their trip to Miami. Yet again the Phillies struggled at the plate, collecting only 5 hits on the evening. Freddy Galvis, Michael Young, Dom Brown, Laynce Nix, and Chase Utley each collected a hit a piece in the game, and four of the five hits were singles.
The Phillies were struggling mightily at the plate entering the eighth inning trailing 2-0 as Cliff Lee seemed headed for his first loss of the season. Lee was pinch-hit for by Chase Utley, who proceeded to crush a home run to tie the game at two apiece. It was Utley's third home run of the season and he now has 12 RBI's in 13 games this season.
While the hitting simply wasn't there on the night for the Phillies, there were the silver linings of another great outing by Lee, and some spectacular plays in the field by Ben Revere, including a catch that may still be standing as the best of the season come October. The Phillies will face the Reds tomorrow, with Kyle Kendrick taking the mound.
