Earlier today the San Francisco 49ers agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2014 draft pick. It had been widely speculated that the 49ers would ship Smith to a new team this off-season after Colin Kaepernick took his starting role while he was injured.
While some might view this trade as having no effect on the Philadelphia Eagles, it does actually have some implications for the team. While it had never been guaranteed that Nick Foles would be traded this off-season by the Eagles, it seemed a likely possibility. Kansas City appeared to be the most likely suitor for Foles as Andy Reid was hired as their coach earlier in the off-season and the team is in dire need of a quarterback. The Chiefs hold the first pick in the draft that is approaching, and in a class with no stud quarterback like the 2012 draft had, it was uncertain whether the Chiefs would burn the first pick on someone like Geno Smith. It was believed the Chiefs would search for their quarterback through a trade, and now after having acquired one, the Eagles have a big decision to make for their own quarterback position. With the probability of Foles being traded decreased now, the Eagles must decide whether they will spend their 4th overall pick on someone like Geno Smith, another player, or trade down in the draft order. The first draft under new head coach Chip Kelly should prove interesting in a draft with few superstars. So sit tight and get ready for the draft. E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!
