On Monday the Philadelphia Eagles released a pair of Defensive Tackles, veterans Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson. This is just the beginning of what appears to be a busy off-season ahead.
After the pair of players was released, there were rumblings that Nnamdi Asomugha could be the next in line to be released, as the team goes through an overhaul under new head coach Chip Kelly. The 32 year-old Jenkins was due to make $5.5 million this year after signing a five-year $30 million deal in 2011. With only 9.5 sacks in his two season, Jenkins just did not live up to his contract and chose to part ways with him. Perhaps on the more emotional side was the release of the longest tenured Eagle, Mike Patterson, who had been with the team for eight seasons. Patterson, a former first-round draft pick, underwent brain surgery in January 2012, and was diagnosed with a brain malformation after having a seizure in training camp in August 2012. Despite all the medical issues, Patterson returned to play in 5 games at the end of last season. Patterson, who was a class act throughout his time in Philadelphia, maintained that standard after being released. He released a statement that was very classy and thanked the Eagles and fans, and wished everyone the best. We here at the Broad Street Beat wish Mike Patterson nothing but the best in all his future endeavors, and have no doubt he will sign with another team soon. So in the words of Rob Burgundy, you stay classy Mike Patterson.
